Melojan jalkineet
Melojille sattuu eniten vahinkoja rannalla. Astutaan lasiin, terävään kiveen tai liukastutaan rantakivillä. Kunnollisilla jalkineilla on tärkeä merkitys. Avokanootissa on helppoa kuljettaa mukana sandaaleja, lenkkareita jopa kumisaappaita, jotka voi pukea ennen rantautumista. Kajakissa miellyttävät sandaalit tai lenkkarit voivat olla liian isot, mahtuakseen pohjan ja kannen väliseen tilaan. Paljaat jalat kylmettyvät myöskin nopeammin.
Hyviä vaihtoehtoja ovat erilaiset neopreenisukat tai jalkineet. Neopreeni toimii lämpöeristeen tavoin ja sukan sisään mahdollisesti joutunut vesi lämpenee vartalon lämmöstä. Umpisolukkoisen materiaalin ainevahvuus vaihtelee 3 – 5 mm. Sisäpinnalla voi olla myös ”thermoplush layer” lisäämässä lämpövaikutusta. Sukkia parempia vaihtoehtoja ovat kovapohjaiset neopreeni tossut. Pohja lisää kulutuksen kestoa ja antaa pitoa liukkaillakin kivillä.
Jalkineita on lyhyt- ja pitkävartisia, samoin avattavia malleja jotka suljetaan vetoketjulla tai erilaisilla tarrahihnoilla. Vetoketjullisissa jalkineissa on kiinnitettävä huomiota, ettei vesi pääse sisään vetoketjun välitse jotta ei synny viilentävää kylmäsiltaa. Valitsetpa lyhyen tai pitkävartisen, varmista ettei verenkierto esty pitkälläkään melonta etapilla valitsemalla sopiva koko.
